ORIENTATION
[When you start to stir from your slumber, you awaken to the smell of dust and rotted wood. Your bed is far from comfortable -- lumps in the mattress, a tattered blanket that barely keeps you warm and a pillow almost as hard as a rock-- and you'll immediately see there are others in your room with you.
All of you are confused, surely. "Where am I?" "What place is this?" Questions like that stir through your mind while you take in your surroundings. Something might catch your eye before anything else, though. A coloured chest tied with a bow, a large gift tag is attached to it with your name on it. There's one for everyone in each dorm, and if you open it you'll find:
An old, worn school uniform.
A colourful costume.
And a pamphlet with information about you, about your stay in this Academy, and a map of the layout of the school and the training grounds outside. The descriptions are vague, leaving out important details about your new super powers called "Quirks", a bland description about how you were selected to join the Academy called "VA" (no explanation what it means), and even the map has lame descriptions of locations that don't really give you a good idea of where you're staying.
Before you can start exploring, or chatting away with your neighbors, a voice rings over old intercoms. It sounds low and comforting, like a long lost friend. But there's something about that that feels.. unsettling. A feeling in your gut that this voice was anything but friendly.
"Welcome, students. You must be very confused, but I assure you I'll be able to answer all the questions you have in just a few minutes.
For now, relax, explore, and meet your new classmates who will be staying with you during this semester.
Oh, but..... whatever you do, don't enter the dining room."
The intercom cuts off, leaving you with a cryptic message to think about on top of.. everything else you're dealing with right now.]

[He smiles there, though the smile is a touch apologetic.]
Quirks...those are powers, or special abilities, correct?
no subject
[To his question, Mirio nods.]
That's right. They're abilities that everyone is born with...though they tend not to manifest until you're around four or so. Quirks come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, and it's not at all unheard of for someone to have a Quirk that can affect others...
[Like, uh. Swapping Quirks, which is...hm! He's not going to go down that road right now because he doesn't like where it leads him.]
no subject
[That is quite the change from his world, for many reasons. Some of which he will share freely in a moment, and others which will require a budding friendship to drag out of him.]
And everyone has these Quirks? It isn't rare?
no subject
[Mirio affirms, nodding his head once.]
Things didn't used to be that way though...but as generations progressed they became more common.
[And more powerful, since kids these days are coming up with Quirks that he wagers will surpass even his own...]
no subject
[Because that's what powers are in his world: chaotic. The government barely manages to keep a hold on the few ability-users in his world, and even then people slip through the cracks all the time. How would anybody keep that many people with special powers in line?]
no subject
[Mirio states simply, folding his arms over his chest.]
Many of us choose to go to university to become licensed heroes. It's a profession as much as being a police officer or a doctor. Because in a world full of people with Quirks, there's bound to be people acting as Villains...and that's where Heroes step in, to keep the peace.
1/2
[He trails off there, as if he's thinking of something- or someone- entirely outside of this situation. He gets a wistful look on his face as well.]
2/2
That certainly sounds like a useful arrangement. Where I am from, people with 'abilities' are quite rare, so we do not have an entire profession devoted to keeping them in line. It's just a branch of the secret service. Most people will go their whole lives without personally meeting someone with an ability, so there is no need for heroes.
no subject
So it's the opposite for you...that's interesting.
[Fascinating, even.]
It's hard for me to imagine a world without Quirks, but that was really just a few centuries ago. Things change a lot faster than you'd think in just a hundred years.

[It's a foregone conclusion in their world. Without Heroes...the world would be in utter dissaray.]

[People with strong healing Quirks save lives otherwise lost. Some Quirks able to look into the future to predict how things will turn out...]
no subject
You're one of the hero-types, aren't you?
[That kind of burning optimism can't mean anything else.]
no subject
How'd you guess?
no subject
Just a hunch. I'm familiar with hero-types. Not literal heroes, but those who act like one.
no subject
[Mirio jabs a thumb towards his own chest.]
I was inspired to become a hero at a young age...by another Hero who has inspired a lot more before me.

Others, well. Somehow, they end up going down a path that leads them to becoming a Villain. But I suppose that kind of thing can happen in any society.

In the end, 'people' are always 'people', aren't they?
no subject
[Whether Mirio notices or not, he doesn't make mention of it.]
But well look at me, I'm getting all philisophical here and we've only just met.
no subject
[He enjoys that kind of thinking anyway.]
you ever can't spell
[He wears his heart on his sleeve at all times so he's not a particularly thought-provoking person.]
lmao all the time
[Since they need to explore and find All For One and all.]
